With the approval of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), Nanjing has become the first city in Jiangsu Province to join the organization. According to international rules, Nanjing has also automatically become a member of the World Association of Major Metropolises (WAMM). This international “double membership” will help the city of Nanjing expand its influence, increase its urban primacy and raise the “voice of Nanjing” on the world stage.
Operating as the metropolitan section of the UCLG, the WAMM was constituted in 1985 as an international organization for major cities around the world. Founded at a time when multilateral exchanges were emerging and thriving among international metropolises, the organization aims to promote exchange and cooperation among metropolises, disseminate worldwide experience and expertise on metropolitan governance, advocate and improve the international standing of metropolitan governments, and mobilize on issues arising in the process of urbanization. The WAMM has close ties with important international organizations such as UN-Habitat and the World Health Organization. Currently it has 139 member cities.
